Encodya (Nintendo Switch)

Publisher: Assemble Entertainment

What I Paid: $13.50

Verdict: Not Shovelware.

What I Say:

Encodya is a crowd-funded point and click adventure set in a dystopian future. You are Tina, a 9 year old orphan girl who scrapes by on her own with the help of her robot guardian.

You can progress through this adventure as either Tina or SAM-53: both are needed to solve some of the puzzles.

There’s lots to like in this adventure, tempered by some shortcomings. The artwork and environment are great. The controls on Nintendo Switch are somewhat troubling and not explained. Combining items, essential during the early part of this adventure, is not explained and somewhat counter-intuitive. There was more than one occasion during this adventure where I felt severely hampered by the interface rather than the puzzle logic.

There are two modes in which you can play this game: Easy and Hard. You can’t change between them during a playthrough. Easy Mode shows hot spots on the screen and hints are available if you so desire. Hard Mode does not show hot spots and hints are not available. I played in Hard Mode which lead to one almighty roadblock towards the end where a relevant object was all but invisible as it could not be highlighted by walking next to it but could only be found by using the correct inventory item on it.
